The short version

Ampersound (fka first.fm) is a music analytics tool that connects to your Last.fm account and shows you insights about your listening history.

  • I collect your Last.fm username and your listening history (artists, tracks, timestamps)
  • I use Spotify to look up artist info like popularity and genres — Spotify never sees who you are
  • I use PostHog to see how people use the site, and some sessions may be recorded to help me fix bugs and improve things. Recordings are viewed only by me (Avi)
  • I don't sell your data, share it with advertisers, or send you marketing emails
  • You can ask me to delete your data anytime by messaging me on Reddit (u/avidoubleu) or emailing ampersound.app@gmail.com

The rest of this document spells the above out in more detail.

What I collect and why

Your Last.fm username. When you connect your Last.fm account, Last.fm tells me your username. I store it to keep track of whose data is whose.

Your listening history. I pull your scrobbles from the Last.fm API. For each one I store the artist name, track name, album name, and the timestamp. This is what powers everything in your dashboard.

Artist information from Spotify. To enrich the analytics, I look up artist details (popularity, genres, image) from Spotify. Spotify only receives artist names, never anything about you.

How you use the site. I use PostHog to understand how people interact with Ampersound. This includes which features you use and what you click on. Some sessions may be recorded so I can fix bugs and figure out what to build next.

What I do with it

The main thing: power your dashboard.

I may also use the data in aggregate to spot interesting patterns across the community — for example, what % of users have a "mainstream" taste profile, or which artists are emerging across the user base. If I publish anything based on this (substack, reddit post), it will only ever be aggregate stats, never anything that identifies an individual user.

If I ever want to do something else with your data beyond what's listed in this policy, the policy will be updated and I'll ask for your consent before doing it.

What I don't do

  • Sell your data
  • Share it with advertisers
  • Send you marketing emails
  • Track you across other sites
  • Use your data for anything beyond what's described here

Your rights

You can:

  • Delete your data — message me on Reddit (u/avidoubleu) or email ampersound.app@gmail.com and I'll remove everything. Note that this means your Ampersound dashboard will no longer work.
  • Ask what I have on you — same channels, I'll send you what's in the database

If you're in the EU, UK, or Canada, you have additional rights under GDPR and PIPEDA respectively (access, correction, deletion, objection to processing, data portability). Contact me to exercise any of them. If you think I'm doing something wrong please let me know and I will do my best to update or explain.

Third party services and where your data lives

These are the external services Ampersound uses. Each has their own privacy policy.

  • Last.fmsends me your username and listening history when you connect
  • Spotifyreceives artist names for metadata lookups, doesn't see anything about you
  • PostHoghandles product analytics and session recordings, stored in the United States
  • Railwayhosts the database and backend in Amsterdam
  • Vercelhosts the frontend, collects basic web traffic stats

Kids

Ampersound isn't aimed at people under 16. Please don't use it if you're under 16.

Changes

If I make significant changes to how I handle your data, I'll update the date at the top and notify users through the site. If you don't agree with the new version, you can always ask for deletion.
